My first branding session: turning my living room into a studio

This session will always stand out as my very first branding photography session — and it proved that you don’t need a professional studio to create meaningful, polished images.

I graduated high school with Ally, so when she reached out after finishing cosmetology school to ask if I could take her branding photos, I was beyond excited to reconnect. Photographing someone you’ve known for years, especially as they step into a new chapter of their career, is something truly special.

Ally told me she wanted her personal branding session to be simple, clean, and affordable. She didn’t need anything over the top — just professional images she could use to represent herself as a hairstylist. I offered her my 30-minute mini branding package, and she loved the idea.

She sent over inspiration photos, and a clear theme emerged: studio-style images with a white backdrop. That’s when I realized one small issue — I didn’t have a studio.

Creating a Home Studio for a Branding Photo Session

I started looking into renting local studios, but most required longer booking times that didn’t make sense for such a short session. Instead of letting that stop me, I got creative. After talking it through with Ally, we decided to set up a backdrop right in my living room.

Before the session, I spent nearly an hour steaming every wrinkle out of the backdrop. I wanted the space to feel professional, intentional, and worthy of her brand — and it paid off. The photos turned out clean, modern, and exactly what Ally envisioned.

More than anything, this session ignited a dream I didn’t even realize I had yet: one day owning my own photography studio space. A place not only for my clients, but one that I could rent out to other photographers and content creators.

This first branding session reminded me that big dreams often start in small spaces — and with a little creativity, you can turn almost anywhere into a studio.
